Sugar Bombs

Sugar Bombs

via Nick Douglas:

Q: What sugary drink limits do you place on your kids?

A: My job as a parent is to guide them through the day to make the best choices. If my son has lacrosse practice for three hours, we go straight to McDonald’s and buy a 32-ounce Powerade.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

  1. When I worked at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, I was, the summer the museum opened, working in the Children’s Museum. I spent the morning fixing things broken the day before… and the day before… and the day before… and the day before….

I wondered why things were always getting broken. I also wondered why kids ran wild in the museum and why, if I happened to be cleaning barf out of the Caribou pelt in inflatable igloo, I would find myself crushed by a child who had jumped from the roof of the bamboo play structure…

I wondered no more as one day, after I had spent the morning fixing things I went down to the cafeteria with my friends for coffee and saw a table full of children being given, as 10:30 in the morning, a jam-filled sugar donut and a large pop….

  2. Bingo. And we are hardwiring their growing nervous systems to be sugar addicts.

But the thing I love most about this quote is the “32 ounce” part. I used to feed horses for a living, and horses will drink 32 ounces of something at a time. People shouldn’t do that.

  3. Except there is no connection between sugar and hyperactivity in children… it is the fact that their parents or supervising adult does nothing to curb their annoying behaviours and let them act out of control.

  4. You’d think carrying 32 ounces of anything around in your belly would have a sedentary effect, but no.
